Minutes

Members in Attendance: Bill Clark, Chair/Parent; Rich Holland, Principal; Marian Christianson, PE Teacher; Jamie Sackett, Parent; Tim England, Parent; Mary Oliver, LA Teacher; Susan Barker, Administrative Assistant

Welcome – Dr. Holland welcomed everyone, noting that this was the last meeting of the school year. As a tribute to Council members, Mrs. Debbie Fritz, Choral Director, and an ensemble of her 8th Grade Girls Chorus performed two songs. They of course, were wonderful! Old Business – The teacher representative election was held May 5 to select a new representative to replace Mrs. Marian Christianson, whose term is expiring this year. Teachers Dr. Anne Crain, Mr. Louis Mair, Mrs. Jackie Zuk, and Mrs. Debra Wood volunteered to be considered and Dr. Anne Crain was elected. She will begin a two year term in 2009-10.

There were no new volunteers for the positions of parent representatives, and all existing members agreed to serve again next year. The only parent who cannot serve again was Mrs. Joan Cox, who will no longer have a child at Jones. Joan plans to continue to attend meetings next year and we are delighted to have her involvement. She has been a member of our school council since we opened Jones. Thanks to all members for their continuing commitment to Jones!

New Business – Mrs. Poole, AP, provided a discipline update for the month of April, showing comparisons with April, 2008. Members once again noted that behavior at Jones is within a very acceptable range and that the school stands firm with misbehavior.

Dr. Holland provided a personnel update. Two key positions have been filled for next year. Mr. Lindsey Allen, former algebra teacher at Jones and currently, AP at Holsenbeck Elementary School in Barrow County, will be the new 6th grade administrator, taking the position being vacated by Mrs. Cheryl Krug, who is transferring to open Twin Rivers Middle School. Mrs. Lisa Woung, currently our 6th Grade Instructional Clerk, will be the new SASI Clerk/Registrar, assuming the duties held by Mrs. Theresa Powell, who will be moving to help open the new North Gwinnett Middle School.

Dr. Holland noted that the school would be working to fill other vacancies for Special Education Stellar Substitute; Special Education Para Pro; and 0.75 ESOL.

Jones is anticipating an enrollment of 1305 in 2009-10, and needing eight fewer trailers.

Dr. Holland asked Council Members their feelings and suggestions regarding disciplining students for cell phone infractions. Should a cell phone interrupt class, normal protocol is to take the phone and have the child’s parent come to school to pick it up. Recently, a concern was expressed that taking the cell phone away from the child diminishes the child’s security when they get home, especially if they are home alone for a period of time. It was also noted that police “ping” cell phone numbers to help locate lost children. Council Members in attendance seemed to feel that the existing protocol was reasonable and a logical response to students using their cell phones when they are not supposed to. Dr. Holland noted that he did not want to do anything that might diminish a child’s security and that he would continue to consider the request to review the protocol.

Dr. Holland thanked all Council members for their contribution to Jones and wished them a good summer. The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 a.m.
