Glenn C. Jones Middle School is pleased to invite you to join the county’s only Leadership Academy for students.  Most middle schools have a Student Council, Beta Club, or Peer Leader program that fosters leadership development, but only our Student Leadership Academy (SLA) provides direct leadership training and is supported by The Gwinnett Student Leadership Team (GSLT), among the best and brightest high school leaders in the country.

SLA is open to all students in all grades.  You do not need to be involved in any other organization and there is no academic grade requirement.  We know that all students, even quiet or shy students have leadership capacity.  To join the SLA you just need to have a sincere interest in learning about leadership and developing your leadership skills.

Please be aware that the following expectations apply to members of the Academy:

Attend a majority of the sessions.  While we recognize that “leaders” are often very busy people and cannot attend every meeting they are invited to, you will gain the maximum benefit of the program by attending as many sessions as possible.  Our GSLT leaders are very busy too and they are giving up their valuable time to be with YOU!  Your attendance will make it worth their time to come and work with us. Conduct yourself appropriately.  Politeness and courtesy to your classmates, to our GSLT leaders, and to other leaders involved in our program is requisite to participation in the program. Your ideas are important, but so are the ideas of others – withhold criticism of ideas you disagree with and make sure you give others a chance to share their ideas. Dress appropriately.  Personal appearance matters to leaders and a higher standard of dress is expected.  Please do not wear jeans or t-shirts to our sessions.  Sunday dress is very appropriate for our sessions.

Participate!  The nature of leadership requires action – you can’t sit out!  You may be asked to do some things that may be uncomfortable for you (like talk in front of a group of people) – leaders do these things, even when they are nervous about it.  This is not the time to be a “fan” or a casual observer, you have to “get in the game” and participate!  Part of leadership is listening and being open to the ideas of other people, even if you do not share or agree with their belief or idea.  To participate, you have to be open-minded and listen to others!

If this sounds like it is for you, we welcome your participation in the Academy!  Please discuss this commitment with your parents prior to submitting your application.  Their support is essential for this to be a meaningful experience for you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Holland
